A fascist military junta known as the First Order, or simply the Order, existed during the period of the New Republic and advocated an extreme neo-Imperialist philosophy known as neo-imperialism. The First Order was controlled by a Supreme Leader from a mobile headquarters rather than from a typical planetary capital, as was the case with the Empire. The First Order was devoted to authoritarian conceptions of order and held a passionate hatred for the New Republic and democratic ideals, which fueled its rise to power. The Galactic Empire was reduced to a handful of successor states as the newly established Republic expanded its influence. Former Imperial officers, nobles, technologists, and warlords, on the other hand, fled to the Unknown Regions as part of a secret Contingency devised by Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine, claiming the status of a legitimate successor to the Old Empire. There, they planned a comeback to power and attempted to restore the Imperial heritage that had been lost to time.
